Meet our People: Building
Everybody knows it’s the people that make a place. However with Arup, you get both. The best people. The best place. Don’t just take it from us. Read what our employees say about life with Arup:

Jason
Lead Electrical Engineer / Design ManagerWith Arup for 4 years
I chose Arup because they offered me the opportunity to come into the firm as part of a leadership team and help in growing it.
On any given day I’ll manage my electrical team of about 14 engineers, set design concepts for projects, review design packages and liaise with clients. In addition to carrying out design management tasks, I’ll also be involved with Global Electrical Skills Network issues such as setting benchmark standards for electrical engineering practice, reviewing design standards and setting global training standards.
I really enjoy being able to work with the engineers that have a passion for doing a great job and having a bit of a laugh at the same time.
Some of the more interesting experiences are projects that take you out of your comfort zone, like working and leading projects that are in overseas locations, such as Dubai. In places that you haven’t worked before, the whole process of design can be different, or you can be on a project that you have never tried before, for example some of the infrastructure projects.
Outside of work I love spending time with my beautiful wife and watching my kids grow up so fast in front of my eyes. I am also a bit of a nut about playing golf, watching Formula 1 and collecting red wine.
Something that people might not know about me is that when I was younger I seriously considered a career as a professional golfer. That was until I went and watched Tiger Woods play. Then I realised that I wasn’t any good at it and became an engineer instead!

Banu
Senior Hydraulics EngineerWith Arup for 12 months
I needed to get into a work environment that had a different mindset about how Hydraulics fits into the core operation of the business. One that also met my needs for more sophisticated work-life flexibility. Arup fitted the bill for me.
My day-to-day is always busy, whether in or out of work. I’m usually in the office between 10 and 2, and at any given time I could be writing or reviewing reports, designing, researching new systems, improving how we operate, training prospective hydraulic engineers or attending meetings - all in the name of Hydraulic Services. Out of the office I’m raising a 7 year old plus caring for my parents. I’ve certainly mastered the art of balancing my immediate daily goals within the time I have available to me.
What I like most about my job is the fact that time and I can’t stand still – or even slow down. And that what I’m doing is changing the industry and how we work, can work and like to work. I also like the flexibility. It means that, as well as having my career, I spend as much time as I can with my family, travel and still have some time to be pampered and indulge in what life’s beauty has to offer.
I’ve also had some interesting experiences here, such as redesigning a building overnight, not just once or twice but three times!
Something people might not know about me: As a child I have received some correspondence from Queen Elizabeth.

Lisa
Graduate structural engineerWith Arup for 1 year
I started with Arup straight after graduating from uni. I was looking for a firm where I would enjoy going to work and gain experience and knowledge quickly. A few of my university friends were already working there and they described it as friendly, social and conducive to learning. Arup appealed to me as a company that encouraged innovation and excellence, and many of their recent projects reflect this approach to design. I anticipated that this would allow me to work on new and exciting projects, and provide challenges on a week-to-week basis.
My work varies considerably day-to-day and I have found my responsibility increase markedly of the past year. The tasks that I might complete in a typical day include structural design, site inspections, providing integrated design solutions or supervising undergraduate engineers.
I really enjoy the opportunity to get out on site and talk to different people. This allows me to see how things are being built, what difficulties they encountering with my designs and how to improve my work in the future. It forces me to build my confidence through making decisions and getting advice from different people. My supervisor at Arup has made a conscious effort to provide me with these opportunities. The open plan and flat management structure allows people to easily interact and ask questions without being intimidated.
One of the most interesting experience I’ve had was participating in the design review session for the Tank St Bridge. This new pedestrian bridge will be the first tensegrity bridge built in the world. This was an opportunity to review the work completed so far and discuss any problems.
When I’m not in work I really enjoy being active and trying new things. I play many sports, ranging from triathlons to basketball to rock-climbing. Arup also encourages these sporting activities and sponsor different sporting events during the year. There are also plenty of social events organised, including a Christmas party and end-of-month drinks.
People might not know, that my favourite meal is vegetable lasagna and lemon meringue pie.

Mathew
Senior structural engineerWith Arup for 11 months
I chose Arup as it has a great reputation when it comes to high-end construction design. I also found Ove Arup’s key speech very inspiring. I wanted to find out for myself what it would be like to work for a company that’s based on this philosophy.
I manage medium size projects and when required help out on certain design issues on other projects. Day to day, this involves attending design meetings, checking architectural design changes and modelling of structures. I enjoy being involved in the creative process that realises special buildings. I’ve had a lot of interesting experiences since I joined.
I’ve designed the structural works for the Apple flagship store in Sydney, which meant working with an international team of clients, architects, mechanical engineers and builders. I also completed the concept design for a pedestrian bridge that spans fourteen tracks at Redfern train station.
I really love living in Sydney. I can go to dance festivals, relax, read, swim and box. Visually, Sydney and its surroundings are breathtaking. Like every capital city it has got fantastic facilities and liveliness, but it does not feel as crowded as most European countries. If only the sun would shine….
Something that people might not know about me is that I like watching romantic comedies.
